What is Easy Symbol?

Easy Symbol — also called the Military Symbol Generator — is the application behind symbol.army. It is a free Progressive Web App from gs-soft AG for drawing, editing, exporting, and sharing individual military symbols and tactical graphics according to MIL-STD-2525C, rendered by the MSS (Military Symbol Set) of gs-soft AG.

Do I need to install anything?

No. symbol.army runs in any modern web browser — just open the link. Because it is a Progressive Web App you can optionally install it on your computer or phone for quicker access, but installation is never required.

Is it free to use?

Yes. symbol.army is free to use, and no account is needed.

Which browsers and operating systems are supported?

symbol.army runs on current versions of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, and Safari, and on recent Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS/iPadOS releases. For the exact minimum versions, see the Compatibility page.

Which symbology standards are supported?

The International Work Mode supports the full MIL-STD-2525C symbol set. The Extended Work Mode adds the Swiss country-specific symbols. You switch between them under General Options.

What can I export, and in which formats?

You can download a symbol as a vector image — .svg, .emf or .xaml — or as a pixel image — .png, .jpg, .bmp or .ico. Format and size are set under Export Format.

How do I save a symbol to continue later?

Use Share Symbol via URL and keep the link, for example as a bookmark. The link contains the complete symbol and opens it again in symbol.army, ready to be edited. Within the same browser tab the current symbol also survives a reload; a downloaded image file cannot be opened again for editing.

Can I use my symbols in map.army?

Not directly — symbol.army has no export to the MilX format of map.army. Download the symbol as an image to use it in other applications. To place symbols and tactical graphics on a map, use the tactical map editor map.army, which contains the same MSS symbology.

How do I make sure I am running the latest version?

symbol.army is updated regularly. When a new release is available you are notified; press Reload to update. You can also force a check at any time with Ctrl + F5. See the Update page for details.

How do I draw my first symbol?

Open the app and follow the first-steps tutorial, which walks you through creating your first military symbol step by step. To get familiar with the interface first, see Start App.

Does it work offline?

No. symbol.army requires an internet connection because every symbol is rendered by the MSS Web Service. Without a connection an offline page is shown, and the app reloads automatically when the connection is back. Installing it as a Progressive Web App adds a convenient launch icon but does not enable offline use.
